Periodontology is a study that involves supporting structures, diseases and other dental problems that affect the lives of thousands across the world. This sub-field of medical science ensures complete care and restructuring of the face and teeth. A Periodontist is also responsible for placement of dentures & other dental implants and is an expert in the treatment of oral inflammation.
ELIGIBILITY & QUALIFICATION
  • The most important subject during school is Biology and therefore PCB Science is the subject one should pass out with in 10+2.
  • One needs to then qualify Bachelor’s in Dentistry followed by Masters and then specialization in Periodontology would ensure your degree.
  • One can also opt for a doctorate in the field. Therefore helping in research & development of the field.
JOB PROFILE
The profile of a working periodontist involve a variety of work. Various different procedures that a periodontist needs to follow & be an expert at are :
  • Problems of jaw & bones related to face
  • Implants for treatment of tooth and gums
  • Cosmetic surgery like grafting of tissues
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Structural weaknesses in the teeth & mouth
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The future of this field lies in the research and analysis of the gums & problems around the mouth and the facial muscles. The future is very bright and a choice of dentistry should most ideally end with the maximum level of specialization in the course.
REMUNERATION
It is one of the most rewarding profession. In US a Periodontist earns upto 22k USD a year. In India over a period of 10 years of experience the earnings increase considerably about 11-12 lacs annually.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATION
  • There are four entrance exam for admission to post graduate course (MD/MS) in Periodontology in all the medical colleges.
  • NEET-PG is the eligibility cum ranking exam prescribed as the single entrance exam to various MD/MS & PG Diploma courses.
FEE STRUCTURE
The fee ranges from 10 lac to 25 lac depending on the Institute in private sector. Comparatively government institutes are pocket friendly, one has to spend about 60k to 1 lac.
If one plans to study abroad, the cost may go up till 1 crore including allied costs.
